Hockey helmets are an important piece of protective equipment at every level of the game. They're designed with several key features including a hard outer shell, foam interiors and facemasks. Find out how to buy the right hockey helmet by learning more about key hockey helmet safety, style and comfort features.
Hockey Helmet Features
The outer shell of a hockey helmet is typically made of a hard, plastic-like material, while the inside of the helmet is typically lined with padding. There are generally two types of foam used in the interior of a hockey helmet:
- Expanded Polypropylene, also referred to as EPP. This is similar to what is used in bike helmets, with a harder foam covered with a softer foam for a comfortable fit.
- Vinyl Nitrile, also referred to as VN. This is a moldable and soft foam that can provide a more snug fit.
Hockey helmets can also come with various levels of foam density, these are referred to as "dual-density" or "multi-density" helmets.
Some other important hockey helmet features to consider are:
- Four-point chin straps
- Ear covers
- A Wire Cage, Face Shied or Combination Face Mask
- Ventilation Ports
- League Requirements: always check your league's requirements before purchasing a new hockey helmet, and always refer to the manufacturer's instructions and warnings before use.
Hockey Helmet Sizing
A hockey helmet should fit snug, but not cause discomfort. Keep in mind that helmet sizes can vary from brand to brand, and even from model to model. Check the manufacturer's specific sizing guidelines before purchasing.
Pro Tip: Remember that changing your hairstyle may change the way your helmet fits.
