Many Wilson® basketballs are designed with a soft-touch composite cover for durability and exceptional feel. Modern basketballs feature a rubber bladder, which serves as an airtight water chamber for the ball. Threads of polyester or nylon wrap around the bladder to ensure it maintains its shape after hours of play.
Most basketballs are specially designed for indoor or outdoor play. Indoor balls offer softer touch on fingertips, while outdoor balls are crafted for durability, creating a harder touch for hands.
Basketballs are typically available in three basic sizes:
- Size Five are designed for young players, up to the age of 11. These balls measure at 27 ½ inches.
- Size Six are designed for intermediate players between the ages of 12 and 15. They measure at 28 ½ inches.
- Size Seven are designed for male players older than 16 years old. These balls measure at 29 ½ inches.
Many Wilson® basketballs are designed according to NCAA regulations. The NCAA requires a 6 to 7 ball that bounces between 49 and 54 inches for men, and a size 6 ball that bounces between 51 and 46 inches for women.
