Men's Jackets Buying Guide
Stay warm through cold temperatures and winter weather with Men's Jackets & Outerwear at DICK'S Sporting Goods. Not sure which coat is best for you and your next outdoor adventure? We've got you covered with this complete guide to Men's Coats & Jackets:
Outer Shell
An outer shell provides the outermost layer of protection against the elements. Some outer shells are waterproof or water-resistant to help retain heat and keep you dry in rain, snow and wet weather.
Another key feature of outer shells is their seams and how well they shield against moisture. Fully seam sealed jackets have all seams sealed tight to protect against water. Jackets with critical seams sealed have waterproof seams on most exposed areas like the shoulders, but not all seams.
Pro Tip: If you'll be facing extreme winds, look for an outer shell with wind flaps over the zippers to shield against gusts of cold air.
Lining
Jacket lining is the innermost material of your coat that has the most contact with your skin. Different types of jacket and coat linings provide different benefits. Some features to consider in jacket liners are: fleece linings that provide an extra layer of heat retention and moisture-wicking linings that help keep you dry throughout any type of physical activity.
Insulation
Insulated jackets are typically available with two types of insulation: down insulation and synthetic insulation. Down insulation is made of goose and duck undercoating and is lightweight, very warm, easy-to-pack and long-lasting but can be the pricier option of the two insulation styles and can lose effectiveness when wet. Synthetic insulation is made of polyester fibers and mimics the warming qualities of standard down while being water-resistant, but tends to be heavier, bulkier and less durable.
Other Features to Consider
The right men's jacket for you will depend on your own comfort and what type of weather conditions you'll be facing. Here are some other key features to keep in mind before you buy:
- Waterproofing: If you'll be facing wet weather conditions, opt for a jacket that is constructed of waterproof or water-resistant materials.
- Pockets: Pockets offer extra storage for your belongings. If you need extra security, choose secure pockets or zippered pockets.
- Hoods: If you need extra protection from the elements, choose a jacket or coat with a hood. Some styles may offer adjustable hoods that provide a more secure and snug fit.
- Packability: If you'll be traveling or taking your jacket with you on-the-go, be sure to take a look at it's packability. Some packable jackets pack into their own pockets, while others may fold into a pouch.
