Types Of Boys' Bikes

  • Boys' Mountain Bikes: Kids' mountain bikes are essentially smaller versions of adult models, sharing general mountain bike features like straight handlebars and gear shifters. Boys' mountain bikes typically have 20" or 24" wheels. DICK'S recommends 20" mountain bike wheels for boys between 4' and 5' in height, and 24-inch wheels for boys between 4'6" and 5'5" in height.
  • Boys' Road Bikes: The boys' road bikes available at DICK'S are perfect for riding paved streets around the neighborhood, with features like lightweight frames and narrow tires.
  • Boys' Cruiser Bikes: Your little guy will love cruising around on these durable, stable designs.
  • Boys' Training Wheel Bikes: The training wheels are included on these models, helping youngsters learn the basics of riding.

Brakes

The boys' bikes available at DICK'S will typically have one of two brake types. Coaster brakes, also called pedal brakes or foot brakes, stop the bike when the child pedals backwards. Bikes designed for younger, less experienced riders typically include coaster brakes. Bikes aimed at older boys will often feature handbrakes, which activate calipers on both the front and back tires and require a bit more skill to operate correctly. Some newer bikes offer both coaster and handbrakes.

Bike Weight

Ideally, you should try to find a bike that is no more than 40% of your child's body weight. Keep in mind that bikes with coaster brakes do tend to be a bit on the heavier side.

Fitting Tips & Size Chart

The bike's "size" refers to the size of tires. For kids, bikes tires are typically 12", 16", 18", 20" or 24". As a general rule, your child should be able to stand with both feet firmly on the ground when he straddles the top tube on the bike, with an inch or two of clearance above the tube.

Use the chart below to help you determine which size bike your child needs.
